Big Island Special Olympics Athletes competed at the Special Olympics State Summer Games at the University of Hawaii on Oahu from June 3-4.

Special Olympics Athletes from around the state competed in swimming, track and field, unified softball, powerlifting and individual softball skills.

The West Hawaii delegation consisted of six Special Olympics athletes, and they racked up a lot of hardware. The half-dozen lifters brought home nine gold medals, nine silver medals, three bronze and two participation ribbons.

The biggest winner was Isaiah Wong, who was crowned the grand champion with the biggest lifts of the state competition. He rose to the occasion and every one of his lifts were a personal best.

The coaches for Waimea were head coach Matthew Mills and assistant Suzette Mills. For the Kona delegation, Denise Lindsey was the head coach, and was helped by assistant coaches Jehromy Otterman, Nani Lehano and Kit Kurtz.

The Waimea lifters trained out of Crossfit Allstars Waimea, while the Kona lifters workedout at The Club in Kona and IMUA IRON.
